On the flightline of Hill AFB with the snow capped Wasatch mountains in the background, Lt. Colonel Jeremy Sloane Commanding Officer of the 388th OSS Hill AFB, Utah and aviation artist Thierry Thompson stand in front of USAF F-16 (CCIP) BU#82-176, after completing a flight over the Utah test & training range.
Thierry Thompson is a unique artist from the standpoint that he is multi-talented, educated in engineering, design, and art history, he also has the impressive credentials of having built, maintained, and engineered sophisticated formula race cars internationally for over 10 years professionally and for 40 years competing and racing on dirt bikes, karts, and open-wheeled formula race cars; a SwiftDB1 Formula Ford and a Swift008 Formula Atlantic in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) regional and national races.
Nestled among the beautifully twisted and stressed Valley and Costal Oaks of California with a stunning 360º view of Carmel Valley and Big Sur is the location of the artists studio. As you enter the studio, you are immediately overwhelmed by walls covered with numerous eight and twelve foot canvases elegantly floating aviation and automotive fine art. On the smaller walls incapable of holding such grand works of fine art, are acres of framed awards and medals ranging from printing awards, communication arts concepts and campaign awards, commercial illustration awards and international fine art competitions, to awards and recognitions of significant individual and organizational achievements from the U.S. Department of Defense for Beverly and Thierry's selfless and generous efforts as ombudsmen supporting the Department of Defense ESGR missions, to certificates from the U.S. Navy for having successfully “shot“ and “trapped“ on nuclear powered aircraft carriers.
Thierry’s interests in fine art, aviation, the automobile and “anything hi-tech or mechanical“, have morphed into a style of fine art that is anything but traditional from an art subject genre.
As a member of the prestigious Air Force Art Program with numerous pieces of his aviation fine art hanging in the Pentagon, Thierry’s artistic credentials afford the artist unique aviation experiences and opportunities. Among them a ride in the worlds premiere single engined fighter, the U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon, the supersonic, all-weather multirole aircraft built by General Dynamics. General Dynamics is one of the world’s great military aircraft manufacturers, who also happen to be a client of the artist. “You simply do not have the perspective for how agile this aircraft is until you climb into the back seat, and take a ride. When the pilot stands on it, it is stunning how an airframe with such small wings can fly with such agility, speed and ease, the F-16 is a rocket”.
From grade school sketching planes and automobiles, sketching in the pits at Indy and Formula 1 races, to creating cutting edge high-tech fine art and setting industry standards for printing fine art limited editions, Thierry Thompson continues to develop unique, imaginative perspectives and innovative artwork for the discriminating fine art collector to view aviation and aviation history, automobiles, motor-racing, and automotive history as more than transportation.
